Mile 42 280 Overpass

MILE 42 "Riding the Rails"

LOCATION: Under the 280 Overpass near the train tracks.

Kat

(She is watching the trains go by)

I don't want us to go to the shelters. It's better for us here. Under the overpass. At least we're together. I won't let them take my son away from me. We'll go north in the morning. On the next freight train out. Stockton… I've got relatives there…Now that I'm clean… they might help me- Help us… to get started again. If my mother would-If I could just get some day care…I could go back to school…I wasn't that far from being finished…I'm not stupid. I just did some stupid things. Made some bad choices. We'll go north and things will be better. I can feel it in my heart. It feels right. Staying here used to make sense… but now…They'll take him away from me again-He's, all I've got left. I have to take care of him. We have to. We're blood. That means something… doesn't it? Look at all of these tracks. You see how they weave…In and out of each other’s paths. Switching and crossing. Separating... Coming back together-But they always stay together…Like us.

A TRAIN HORN IS HEARD IN THE DISTANCE. THEN SILENCE
