49 Miles review in SF Gate
Review by Anna Mantzaris
SF Gate
What if someone told you it was possible to go to the Haight, Chinatown, Seacliff and the Presidio in a matter of minutes? No, it's not a new form of city public transportation, but Trevor Allen's 49 Miles. Performed by Crowded Fire, it takes audiences on a theatrical tour of San Francisco's famous Scenic Drive (think arm-chair traveling at its best). An eccentric writer who meets his tragic fate near City Hall leaves behind seven audiotapes filled with interviews of Bay Area folk telling their stories from all corners of the city. From an elephant keeper to a heroin addict to a transplanted East Coaster, this diverse group of characters tell tales that insightfully explore topics such as same-sex marriage, gentrification, class wars and racism. Two years in the making, this performance will remind you why sometimes it's important to take the long way home.
