49 Miles review in the SF Bay Guardian
Review by Brad Rosenstein
SF Bay Guardian
Trevor Allen's play Chain Reactions was a strong entry in last year's San Francisco Fringe Festival, and this premiere produced by Crowded Fire and Black Box Theatre has been much anticipated. The loose framing device for the piece is the traffic death of an unknown writer, a redux Ulysses who traverses San Francisco capturing its voices. Seven witnesses to his death channel those 60-odd voices, in a portrait of the city traced along its 49-mile "scenic drive." Allen has a wonderful ear and a lyric gift, and when this fugue for voices is at its best such as in a contrapuntal seesaw duet between a Latina teenager and a pretentious society woman the play builds on "random" juxtapositions of sound and sense to find arresting patterns.
